Better performance and less risk of cardio-vascular disease
Taking deer velvet supplements may lower your risk of heart disease and increase your athletic performance.
These are initial findings from a DINZ-funded study of a group of American weight-lifters taking deer velvet supplements for 10 weeks last year.
The results, which will be presented to 5000-7000 delegates at the US College of Sports Medicine conference in May by lead researcher Dr Craig Broeder, are expected to create a buzz in the athletic and medical worlds.
Speaking at the Antler Science and Product Technology (ASPT) symposium in Queenstown in February, Broeder said some of the results from NZ deer antler velvet (DAV) trial were remarkable.
The subjects of the Benedictine University trial were 34 men aged from 18-35. Each had at least four years weight lifting experience. At the end of the trial, the weight lifters who consumed deer velvet had:
Less fat on their torsos
Lower LDL cholesterol levels
Greater aerobic capacity
Less muscle damage
Greater strength
Greater stamina
The athletes were given 1350 mg of deer antler velvet powder (DAV) twice a day, in the morning and just before bed. They then continued to carry out their resistance training programmes.
